A metabolite that became its own compound

PT-141 exists because of an observation made during Melanotan II research: effects appeared that had nothing to do with pigmentation. Investigation traced them to a metabolite acting at different melanocortin receptor subtypes, and that metabolite was developed separately as bremelanotide.

It is a cyclic heptapeptide acting mainly at MC3R and MC4R, which are expressed in the central nervous system, rather than at the MC1R that governs melanin synthesis in the skin.

Research context

Its mechanism is centrally mediated rather than vascular, which is the distinction that defines its position in the literature. The compounds it is usually compared against act on peripheral blood flow; PT-141 acts on central melanocortin signalling, and studies are frequently designed around exactly that contrast.

  • Hypoactive sexual desire disorder, the indication it completed clinical trials and gained approval for

  • Central versus peripheral mechanisms in sexual response research

  • MC4R pharmacology more broadly, including energy balance, where the same receptor is central

  • Melanocortin receptor subtype selectivity, using PT-141 as the MC3R/MC4R-weighted reference

Read alongside

Melanotan II is the parent compound and Melanotan I the MC1R-selective member of the set. Reading all three together is how the melanocortin subtypes are separated. Kisspeptin-10 approaches reproductive signalling through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis instead.

Documentation and verification

Certificates of Analysis are published for tested products and batches. A certificate is a batch-specific record: it reports what was measured, by which method, on a stated date, against a batch identifier. It is evidence about the sample analysed at the time of analysis, and it is silent on attributes it does not list and on what has happened to the material since.

The batch number is the field that connects the document to a physical vial. Where the identifier on a vial does not appear on a certificate, the certificate does not describe that vial, however thorough the analysis behind it was. Batch records can be searched directly, and the guides below explain what each field establishes and what it does not.
