A topical peptide, filed under the wrong heading

SNAP-8 — acetyl octapeptide-3 — is a cosmetic ingredient peptide, not a nootropic. It appears in this catalogue under a cognitive heading, and the literature does not support that framing: its research context is topical formulation and expression lines.

It is a two-residue extension of acetyl hexapeptide-8, better known as Argireline, developed to improve on that molecule's activity in the same application.

SNARE complex competition

Neurotransmitter release requires vesicles to dock at the membrane, which depends on assembly of the SNARE complex from syntaxin, VAMP and SNAP-25. SNAP-8 mimics the N-terminal segment of SNAP-25 and competes for its place in that complex; a destabilised complex is a less efficient one.

  • Topical anti-wrinkle formulation research, the applied context

  • In-vitro SNARE assembly assays, where the mechanism is measured directly

  • Comparative studies against acetyl hexapeptide-8

  • Percutaneous penetration — the practical limit on any topical peptide, and an active question

Read alongside

GHK-Cu is the other extensively studied topical peptide here, acting on matrix synthesis rather than neurotransmission — the two are studied together often, because they address the same visible subject from unrelated directions.

Documentation and verification

Certificates of Analysis are published for tested products and batches. A certificate is a batch-specific record: it reports what was measured, by which method, on a stated date, against a batch identifier. It is evidence about the sample analysed at the time of analysis, and it is silent on attributes it does not list and on what has happened to the material since.

The batch number is the field that connects the document to a physical vial. Where the identifier on a vial does not appear on a certificate, the certificate does not describe that vial, however thorough the analysis behind it was. Batch records can be searched directly, and the guides below explain what each field establishes and what it does not.
