A thymic peptide with a clinical record

Thymosin Alpha-1 is a 28-residue acetylated peptide first isolated from thymosin fraction 5, a thymic tissue extract. The thymus is where T lymphocytes mature, and the peptide's activity on T cell populations was what drew attention to it.

Unlike most compounds in this catalogue it has been through formal clinical development. It is approved under the name thymalfasin in a number of countries, which means its literature includes controlled trial data rather than only preclinical work.

Mechanism and research areas

The mechanism most reported is agonism at Toll-like receptors — particularly TLR9 and TLR2 — on dendritic cells, which influences how those cells present antigen and therefore how T cells differentiate. It is an immune modulator rather than an immune stimulant, and the distinction matters in the literature.

  • Chronic hepatitis B and C, the indications with the largest trial literature

  • Sepsis, where immune dysregulation rather than deficiency is the studied problem

  • Vaccine adjuvant research, particularly in populations that respond poorly

  • T cell maturation and differentiation in culture

  • Immunosenescence — age-related decline in adaptive immune function

Read alongside

LL-37 and KPV act on innate rather than adaptive immunity, and ARA-290 on tissue-protective signalling. Together they cover the distinct arms of this category.

Documentation and verification

Certificates of Analysis are published for tested products and batches. A certificate is a batch-specific record: it reports what was measured, by which method, on a stated date, against a batch identifier. It is evidence about the sample analysed at the time of analysis, and it is silent on attributes it does not list and on what has happened to the material since.

The batch number is the field that connects the document to a physical vial. Where the identifier on a vial does not appear on a certificate, the certificate does not describe that vial, however thorough the analysis behind it was. Batch records can be searched directly, and the guides below explain what each field establishes and what it does not.
